Help with Boot Camp and Windows 8 MBP and USB disc drive?

- MBP 15" Late 2011 2.2ghz i7, 8GB RAM, 128GB OCZ-VERTEX4 SSD, 500GB SATA HD
I have a copy of Windows 8 Pro im trying to get onto my MBP running OS 10.8.2 but so far im not having much luck.
Now I have 2 Hard Drives in my MBP and did away with the Disc Drrive which is now in an External Case via USB. One of my Drives is an SSD with the OS on and my Apps and the orriginal drive (that now occupies the Disc drive slot) holds my other various files.
I want to use my original drive (as it's biggest) to install Windows on. However when running Boot Camp with the Windows disc in the external drive it restarts after partitioning to a black screen with a blinking underscore in the top left and goes no further?....
Any help on the matter?
I was wondering maybe boot camp wont allow external drive use via USB?
The other question is should I have boot camp 5.0.1 on my mac as i understand this is made for macs without a disc drive...
If so where can I get hold of it?
Thanks for ang help
