You will have to format the drive using the Snow Leopard disc. Boot with the disc in the optical drive, hold down 'C', leave Installer and go to utilities in the Menu Bar, Disk Utility and run erase and select Mac OS Extended (Journalled) into Partition, select Option and make sure HUID partition is selected, back to Installer and continue installation.

You will lose Vista when you format the drive.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

Reset the PRAM first and then try again to install Snow Leopard per instructions from Harry.

Reset the PRAM:

Shut down the computer.

Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously.

Turn on the computer.

Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.

Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

Release the keys.

You can't download a retail copy of Snow Leopard. You can, however, order a copy from Apple direct on line. $29.99 plus SH.
