Is there any point in installing a 64-bit OS on a computer with only 3GB of RAM...

...which is less than the 3.5-4GB limit of 32-bit OSes? Would installing a 64-bit OS be beneficial, inconsequential, or a downright hindrance to the proper functioning of the computer?

*Note: The computer in question does have a 64-bit processor, but the motherboard maxes-out at the currently-installed 3GB.

64-bit allows the use of more memory it does not cripple it and most of the time it runs a little faster and seeing your title with no Mac specs both PC and Mac are available with less than 4GB of ram with native 64b OS's from the factory.

Cheers for any insight For my purposes as an engineering undergraduate; Windows is respectable (& generally necessary), Linux is admirable (& often useful), OS X is enjoyable* (& requires no further justification, although plenty could be given)!
