windows 7 partition with vmware xp

Can someone tell me how to build a vm windows xp on my windows 7 partition on my macbook pro. xp mode is not an option.

Use something like virtual box would be the way I'd go

I'm not sure what you mean by "not an option". You can simply create another partition or use VMWare tools to trim the Win7 partition and create an XP partition with that space.
