i just installed win7 on a 40 gb partition on my mb. After installation i only have 30gb remaining. Is that normal?

Sounds about normal. The operating system, be it Windows, OS X, Ubuntu, etc. takes up a fair bit of room on the hard drive.

Late 2010 iMac 27 inch  2.93GHz i7 16GB RAM 2TB HDD 2011 Macbook Pro 17 inch Glossy  2.3GHz Quad-core i7 8GB RAM 750GB HDD
