Need help opening Excel and Word on Mac

I have emails that have been sent to me and can't open them up. I have iwork '09. Can someone please help me?

Welcome to the Forum. You are a bit stingy on the info. What are you receiving emails in? Are you opening attachments or the emails themselves? What are the file formats that wont open? What OS?
