I have the Windows 7 beta as a guest OS in VM fusion. Installed perfectly without issue. VMware tools downloaded and installed as well without issue. However, please help with the following two issues:

1. There is no "aero peek" feature (showing thumbnails of open windows when clicking taskbar)

2. In IE8, embedded video does not play (like YouTube or the like). Otherwise, IE8 works great...

I have a MacBook Pro 2.4 Ghz (Santa Rosa) w/ 4gb RAM, Leopard....

Please help, want to see if this Windows 7 is all it's cracked up to be, thanks again.

This build of windows 7 (build 7000) is supposed to have all of these features. Not to mention, my windows nor taskbar are "translucent".

(fixed the embedded video by downloading flash....I'm an idiot...)

I don't believe those features are available when running Windows 7 in a VM. I know for sure that Aero is not. You're probably going to have to install Windows 7 using the Boot Camp method and let it run natively. You can install Windows 7 as "Vista" from Boot Camp. Works fine. Runs great.

Regards.

Is there any way to get the appropriate "driver" to run aero graphics with VM?

Make sure you've installed VMWare Tools. It works fine with my installation in VMWare.

Although they have some very limited 3D acceleration support, both VMWare Fusion and Parallels lack full DX9 support, which is needed to run Aero. It's not the driver per se, it's the software emulation of the video card.

Even when you do find a 3D app that is supported, performance is weak at best. I wouldn't look for this support anytime soon, it's just the nature of VMs.

cwa hit the nail on the head, Fusion and Parallels lack proper DX9 support, which is what is needed for Aero to work. If you want all the fancy graphics, then you're limited to Boot Camp.

Amen to that. But Win 7 is fully functional and runs great in a Fusion VM apart from those effects.

Cheers

Well that blows. I agree, Win 7 runs great in VM, albeit without the aero effects.

One last question, if I wanted to "check out" the aero effects by re-installing the beta in BootCamp, should I delete the virtual machine in VM? Thanks.

I wouldn't delete it as long as you're not going to use the Boot Camp Win 7 partition as a VM. You can keep your separate Fusion VM of Win 7 and the BC version both. Other than using more disk space, I don't see any problem with doing it that way.

Regards.
