Windows - Shutting Down

Why does it take so long? I don't understand and it takes forever for the wireless icon to show on the task bar... what's going on?

its partitioned on a 25GB hard drive

What's running in the background? Do a Control-Alt-Delete to bring up the Task Manager and see what applications or processes are on going. The only reason it takes a long time for Windows to shut down is if there are tasks or processes running that have not shut themselves down.
