convert ms word files

I need to convert files from an older Mac running MS Word V8.5.1 to a PC running office XP. Suggestions on how the files can be converted and moved?

Tried emailing and the format was unrecgonized.

Wow, that is dumb eh?
Appleworks still read claris works version old.
Try using appleworks to convert it up to a higher version?

8.5.1 is the OS version. the user tells me its MS Word 98, now.

Is appleworks part of the OS?

word 98 should be able to save the document in a format that word xp can read.
