I know this may sound like heresy on a forum like this, but I have only used Macs since Apple II days and rarely touched a MS-DOS/Windows machine unless there was an engineering program that only worked on this platform.

My last two laptops, Powerbook and iBook, have proved so unreliable in both software and hardware terms. Upgrading to OS X 10.5.1 has been the last straw - lots of force quits, slow startup, print-drivers hanging, drive can read DVDs but not CDs.

So, honestly, how challenging is moving everything to a Windows machine?

Any suggestions on reliable makes, etc.

Thanks

as long as you have put extensions on all your files then there is no problem.

I switched to windows before (years ago) and soon came back to the mac

Before you jump ship, try installing the 10.5.2 update, which was just released yesterday. It's supposed to fix quite a few bugs and may win you back. In all honesty though, don't expect anything different from the Windows side. Unless you build the computer yourself from top-tier parts, plan on enduring hassles like you've not yet known. In actuality, you really should consider buying a new Mac. If OS X doesn't work out better for you on these Intel boxes, you can just boot to Windows instead.

In any event, I'm sure most of your troubles have solutions, even if it means rolling back to Tiger. It's just a matter of rooting out the source of the problem.

I agree. I would seriously look at my options on the mac side before switching to a PC. I think you have a lot more things to consider when switching to a PC. Like viruses, compatibility, reliability (macs are known for their reliability compared to PCs). Try to find out what is wrong with your system because I do not think you will be any happier using a PC. Do you ever here other people switch to a PC? Its ALWAYS the other way around.

there is no perfect solution they all have quirks but i have the least amount
of problems with a mac as one poster said try 10.5.2 it fixed the issues i
was having and a friend of mine went back to tiger on his i-book i think
10.5 was designed to work better on the intel macs.

There is no precise description of the hardware involved. Maybe the PB and iBook just barely made the specs and weren't sufficiently packed with RAM to handle Leopard.

In any case, as was mentioned before, Leopard's 10.5.2 update does seem to squash quite few bugs.
