Hi,

I have a Powerbook G4 OS 10.4.11 and want to have an external drive that I travel with as back-up to my computer. I already have a Lacie one at home that I back-up files to, but it's big and heavy, not suited to travelling with me.

The first "travel size" one (forget what it was, but it was an "all-in-one") I bought wouldn't work because it didn't have enough power I guess. I bought it from a generic computer store where the guy said it was rated to work with MACs but it didn't. Just made a sad clicking sound. Thankfully he took it back.

My next step was to buy on-line a Western Digital Scorpio 100GB 2.5IN SATA 5400RPM 8MB 12MS Notebook Hard Drive OEM and a 2.5IN USB 2.0/1394 FIREWIRE PHR-250cc case. Oops. A newby like me should know better. The case was for IDE whereas the HD is SATA. Returns are difficult with this particular seller.

I'm really at a loss for what I should buy for my needs. I can return the case but not the WD1000BEVS. Could one of you experienced and knowledgeable people out there please recommend what case I should buy to work with this HD? It needs to be durable and hopefully not need external power. Do I need firewire? Is USB enough? Is this HD the right one for my need?

Your suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks!

buy a standard laptop harddrive, get an 2.5 external enclosur, they run off USB alone

example:

SATA to usb:
