Is there a way to stream videos from apple tv not using itunes and also being able to stream .avi files? thanks.

no you have to use itunes to stream to apple tv (atleast for now, I am sure somebody will allow write a program that will one day change that just like what was done with air tunes)

Because at the present time you can only use iTunes (unless you install a linux os on it), so AVI's are out of the question, i find that MP4 files that are encoded at h.264 work pretty well and look good.
