I have the MyBook pro and it is a great piece of work. I also was looking at the LaCie d2 quadra because of the quad interface and the 500GB size. I would suggest those 2. Whatever you decide you should definately get one that has Firewire on it.

I'm looking for a portable one that isn't too heavy and is kind of on the smaller size. I was reading some about the rugged lacie ones, but I'm not really digging the orange. Anyone have any recommendations? Firewire would probably be the best bet. Thanks in advance.

I believe western digital makes one that is called the passport. It is bus powered to but it is USB. I found 5 on newegg.com and they are the Firelite by Smartdisk and Aegis Portable by Apricorn. Neither of which company I have heard.

Thank you~ the suggestions that you gave, do i have to do any formating at all? and if you dont might, can you explain to me a little bit about why the whole formating and compitibility problem with mac?
Id also recommend the "Mybook" series as a good choice!
As for formatting, you have nothing to worry about, just plug it in, and your good to go ^_^
If you want more flexibility AND you are only going to be using your external HDD on Mac OSX then feel free to format it to the HFS+ file system. (Formatting a hard drive to HFS+ on MacOSX can be found using google )
a 3.5" 160GB Maxtor that requires a/c power.
fully formatted in FAT32, mainly used for backups, connected very infrequently.
a 2.5" 120GB Maxtor
fully formatted FAT32, mainly used for music and photo backups. travels with me to work every day.
a 2.5" 80GB Western Digital that came out of my dead 17" HP pavillion
fully formatted HFS+, soley for extra space and some backups on the macbook.
[waits for baggss to crush us all...]

I know a guy who is into p2p software, like Limewire and soulseek. Get this he has TWO 1TB drives, for all of his Movies, "special" videos, music, applications. This guy is like a world archive
