I just bought a new Western Digital 400GB HD - Model: WD4000KS-00MNBO. I have a G5 Dual Core 2GH running 10.4.2. I start up from the CD and format the drive Extended (Journaled). Then I start to load the system and it gets stuck and never finishes. Is it possible the drive is too big? Need a system update? Can it be a PC only drive (I thought drives were all the same at this point, the difference being how you format)? It's amazing there's no way to contact apple to check compatibility and such, not even through email. They have the worst customer service I've ever seen. Please help!!!!!! Thanks!!!!!!

Hi!

I don't know how much I can help, but here are a couple things that come immediately to mind.

It sounds as if the disk formatting completes normally. Yes? If so, that's a good thing. That would say to me you probably don't have a hardware compatibility issue. Your G5 would seem to be able to access the complete drive.

Look at the back of your CD/DVD. Does it look good? Do you see any scratches or gross imperfections? When you load the installation disc into your system, does it give you the option of verifying the integrity of the disc? (Do OS X discs do this?) It almost sounds as if you have a problem with the installation disc rather than the new hard disk.

Assuming you have everything backed up et al, you might try installing to your old drive. If it will install, then the problem may be related to the new WD drive. If it won't install and does the same thing as with the new drive, it's likely your installation media OR the optical drive itself.

Before you actually do anything, you might even search through Google if you haven't already. Search on your machine type, new WD drive type, OS X, et al. See what you can find. Whatever problem you're having, someone else has likely had it.

Good luck!
