Serial ATA HDDI have just inherited a 160gb serial ata hard drive (when my Toshiba PVR died). Can I use it in a external hdd enclosure with my MBP as a back up drive and what do I need?
I am guessing that they make external enclosures for 3.5" serial ata drives.

All you would need is an enclosure that takes 3.5" SATA hard drives, which are quite common. Then you stick the drive in, plug it into your Macbook Pro, and then format the drive using Disk Utility. You should then be set to do whatever you want with it.

Yes. You can find enclosures that do either or both. Just hook it up to your MacBook and go. Make sure you get an enclosure for a Serial ATA drive though.

you can also get a USB2.0 to IDE (PATA/SATA) adaptor like this

Don't think you can format the disk with it though, needs to be be pre-formatted. Great idea if you need to back up the SATA drive
