Can I boot from an external USB drive?

Can anyone tell me if I can load tiger on an External USB drive and boot from it, or does it have to be a Firewire drive?

That depends on your system. If you have an intel mac - the hardware does support booting from USB.
Some G3's and G4's had unofficial support with USB 2.0 and OHCI compiant devices - you should probably research your particular system
