I found the same problem...

after years working on PCs, I have 2 older webcams (perfectly workable, as standards haven't changed much since Noah left the Ark) but my iBook won't recognise either.

Unsurprisingly, Apple recommends their own camera but is there a list anywhere of compatible cams?

I work away a lot and would like to have a video link home whenever I can...

Where's the right-click button?

There is a cheap shareware patch that lets you use iChat with most USB cams its called iChatUSBcam or something creative like that. It works OK with all the recent USB logitech cams and there IS a list of known compatible cams on their website. There is another patch that I've heard tell of, but never tried... can't remember the name. Search google or these forums. You can also use (almost) any DV video camera with Firewire as a web cam in iChat with no drivers or patches.
