A friend borrowed an external HD to copy some files. He runs Windows. Received the drive back, can open in OSX but cannot see the files.

If I open the drive in Windows VM, I do see the files.

How can I sort this out to be able to view the contents in OSX?

What is the format of the external HD? NTFS or FAT32?
