Connect Macbook Pro to Surround sound through older dvd player

Hey, I've just been kindly given an LG LH D6230 for free and I'd really like to use the 5 surround sound speakers with my early 2007 macbook. I've tried using of these

and putting it in the AUX inputs from the audio out but to no avail.

Any ideas?

You'd only get stereo, at best, from those aux in's.
