Cant copy files to hard drive or memory stick ?

I have a macbook pro mac os x 10.7.3. When I try to copy files from the hard to the macbook there is no problem they copy but when I try and copy files to the hard drive it won't work. The paste option isn't even highlighted. Does anybody know how to fix this ? When I try to copy one small video file to a 4gb memory stick it says that there is not enough space but there defiantly is as the memory stick is empty and the file is only 700 mb.
Any help id really appreciate

It probably has something to do with how the memory stick is formatted. This thread will probably be moved to a different sub-forum since it is techy not loungey.
