Getting an old Laserjet 5L to work with OSX G4

I gave my Dad a 5 year old G4, put 10.3 on it and had to do so much stuff to make his old HP Laserjet 5L to work with it. It worked fine with the older G3 and OS9.
I finally got it to work with Parallel to USB software, GhostScript and GIMP print. Then one day it stopped printing in the middle of a print.... still works on the G3 though.
I'm fed up trying to figure out how I did it last time and what went wrong... I cannot get it together again on the G4 for this Laserjet 5L to work. I can't remember how I got the "parallel to USB" choice to appear either. I updated to 10.3.9 also.
He refuses to give up trying and buy a new laserprinter. Is there an easier way?
