AirPort Extreme Base Station

I got one as a present, my friend had no use for it anymore. I already have a wireless router, is there any need for this base station? does it just act as any other wireless router or will it boost the connection?

You can connect it to your existing router in bridge mode and use it to extend your existing wireless setup

Also, depending on what your existing wireless router is, it may be a better wireless router. It's dual-band wireless-n (current version anyway), and it has a USB port for a printer or external disk drive.

It unlike some others will actually let you connect a USB powered external hard drive and use it for wireless Time Machine backup without issues or so thats been my experience besides being able to add up to 4 Airport Express's to sling music to different Hi-Fi's around the home bit perfect from the optical port on the AE.
