I have a MacBook version 10.5.8 and I have bought a TOSHIBA STOR.E ART 3 1TB portable hard drive although didn't realise until it arrived through the post that the system requirements for this product aren't compatible with my Macbook. I have spoke to someone who has advised me that you can make the TOSHIBA STOR.E ART 3 1TB portable hard drive compatible although they aren't sure how to do this. So this is the question, is there any one out there who knows how to do this?

Open up Disk Utility and reformat it as HFS+.

I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.
In the Windows world, most everything folks don't understand is called a virus.

Cheers for your feed back although I should have advised everyone that you are talking to a real novice when it comes to computers. I have tried to follow your instructions but when I go on to Disk Utility how do I reformat it as HFS+?

Sorry for my ignorance but that's why I have come on here to speak to people who hopefully know what they are talking about.
