URGENT:: Connecting Macbook Pro to mixer

Hey I am doing some recording and I want to connect my Yamaha 512 emxsc mixer to my laptop. I am using an rca to 1/8 adapter. and i plug it in to record in garage band and it does not register. I don't want to but an audio interface nor do i have one so i need help like now. If that doesn't make sense, I plug it in and the computer doesn't recognize it, do I need a driver or anything?

Are you are that the system preference for audio input is set correctly. I don't remember whether it will say mic in or line in but I think that's the one. Don't have mine plugged in at the moment to check. I don't remember if there is acsetting to change in Garage Band.
