ext h/d prob on my i mac

hi guys
iva a i mac with a atmt ext drive i went to use the drive and the message disc instertion the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer ....initalize ignore or eject i tried on a pc lap top and it asks to reformat how do i open the drive many thanks in advance

You might want to check how that external drive is formatted. Was it used with a Windows machine? If so, and the drive is formatted NTFS, this could be part of your problem.
