    macbook pro 15" 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3, 240GB OWC Mercury Electra 6G solid state
    external hardrive partition
    i want to create a partiton on my western digital 500gb i was told to use disk utility but i already have stuff on my hard drive and it says : this partition cannot be modified

    if i do the partition will it erase everything ?

    Partitioning can destroy data if not done carefully or with a non-destructive utility. A lot depends on how much data is already on your WD external and where on the drive the data is located. Disk Utility can certainly do the partitioning and will in most instances not destroy data - if there's room.

    Make a clone backup of your hard drive before you attempt to create another partition. That way, you can always restore the drive to its original state.
