Backing up Imac & Mac Book pro

Help please, we have an Imac and just ordered a mac book pro.

What is the best and cheapest way to back up please ?

Apple time capsules are so expensive,

What is the best thing to buy and where ?

appreciate your help

Mac Specs: 13" MB 2.4ghz, 2gig ram, OS 10.7.5

pigoo3 is offline
You just need an external hard drive...and use the "Time Machine" software that comes with OS 10.5 & higher.
