Turn on/off HDD from MBP

Hi there,

I have a Seagate 500gb hard drive, which plugs in USB to my MBP, and is charging at the wall. Is there anyway I can shut down the HDD from the MBP, so that I can turn it on again via my mac, as opposed to (ejecting) unplugging and replugging.

Is the Seagate USB-powered? If so, then you've really no option but to eject and unplug it. Even with an externally powered HD, you still have to eject the drive or you end up with some serious problems.
