To be honest, I purchased this él cheapo 4 port USB hub a few years go for about $20 and I have been using it hooked up to my Airport Extreme's USB port. I have an printer and a couple of external HD's hooked up to it, and they all stream wireless with no problems whatsoever.
And no, it is not powered externally. I think G.E. makes it. Doug |

Cyberpower portable 4-port, battery powered (excellent, but no longer made
); also Targus powered 7-port hub, two ports high-powered (1000 mA), audio pass through (not used).
