Error Message When Emptying Trash

I have an iMac 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and a Lacie Porsche External Hard Drive (500 gigs). My Time Machine backups have been going to that External. I dragged some of the backups into the trash to delete them leaving the last one from each month except for the current month. Every time I try to delete the trash, I get this error message: The operation canít be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003).
I can empty the trash once my external has been ejected of all other items except for the Time Machine Backups....those reappear in the trash as soon as my external is hooked up.
Any clues or ideas? I certainly would appreciate it. Thanks
