I just traded in my miniDP to VGA for a miniDP to DVI adapter and got a DVI cable to run to my external 20" LG 23043t monitor.

When i was using my miniDP to VGA, i had it hooked up to a KVM switch so i could switch between my PC and my MBP. The KVM was being difficult so i switched it out for the DVI since my monitor has a D-Sub and DVI-D connector and i can choose with "source" i want to view on the monitor.

I went and bought a DVI-D single link cable. My monitor doesn't even recognize the dvi link source and my macbook doesn't even recognize that an external monitor is hooked up. I tried clicking on "detect displays" and i get nothing. Did i purchase the wrong cable?

Nope, right cable.

Unplug everything and plug it all back in - only way to make sure it's not a connection issue.

Make sure you have changed the monitor to the DVI input.

Computer monitor should not be affected by which is turned on first, but worth a shot - power down MBP. Turn on monitor, then power up the MBP.

After that, I'd say a bad adapter, cable or DVI port on the monitor. Only way to determine which is by changing them out one at a time, preferably with known working devices.

fixed.

it was the wrong cable.

i had boughten a dvi-d to dvi-d single-link cable when i really needed a dvi-d to dvi-d DUAL link cable. Just picked up the dual link cable from the computer store and everything is all fine and dandy now!

Think it was a bad cable then. Wouldn't think it'd require a dual link cable on a 20" display. Single link provides for resolutions up to 1920 x 1200 and dual link above that.

wasn't a faulty cable .. I tested the single-link DVI cable from the DVI port on my computer's video card to my 20" monitor and it worked just fine .. It just wouldn't work from my miniDP to DVI.

it's working now though .. yippee!

Glad it's working and appreciate you reporting back what it took.

But, that's still strange unless your adapter is for dual link only.
