So I bought a TOSlink cable* to connect my macbook pro to my z550 5.1 speakers, and only the front speakers work, I can't get any of the rear speakers, or the center speaker to work. Are there any settings that I need to change? I plugged the optical side into the speakers, and the other end into the headphone jack of my macbook pro. I'm using Max OS x 10.5.8

* Amazon.com: 6ft Toslink to Mini Toslink Cable: Electronics

Edit: I figured out a way for dvds, but what about for music using iTunes and youtube videos, etc etc?

It will only output 5.1 from 5.1 sources. So, as you've discovered, listening to most DVDs you'll have 5.1. But, there is not the option to take a mono or stereo source and output in 5.1 that I've found.

I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.
