Can't Copy Files from WD ext HD to iMac

I'm using a Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (500GB) external (USB 2.0) drive with my iMac. Previously, it was a little slow, but everything worked.

Now, I find that I cannot copy files from the WD drive to the Mac hard drive.

My cursor changes into that circle-with-a-line-through-it symbol when I try dragging the file onto my desktop. (Have never seen that before.)

Neither will it allow me to copy files from it to a USB thumb drive (which also works with a PC).

I appreciate any help. Thank you, in advance.

What format is the WD 500 GB drive using? Post back.
