I like Western Digital Studio ll and the price varies for amount of space you need and sales are going on all the time and if you need portability over speed Passport from them is great also.

I really like the look of the time capsule harddrive. If you're looking to go all out go with the 1TB time capsule because that does not only backup your files but you could also share those file with the other Macs/ PCs on your network (if you have any). But if your looking for just external harddrives without the network sharing go with seagate harddrives, they are the most reputable.

Once you go Mac you never go back (to PC)
Android sucks!!

Time Capsule is great but generally is on site and not bootable without doing a work round. My solution is to have FW800 Ext Hd as an 'off site' backup using Superduper which gives protection against fire and theft and the ability to copy or use you system exactly as it was when u did you last back up, either by booting thru another computer or doing a bootable copy to a new computer/HD
