MacBook - connecting my macbook to my tv

let me just start off by apologizing because i know you guys have probably gotten this question tons.

this is whats happening

i have a macbook 2.16GHz

i got a mini dvi to female HDMI cable connected that to an HDMI cable to the back of my sony bravia 32"

i couldn't get it to work for the longest time and i just kind of gave up but then all of a sudden it worked! then i hit detect displays and it stopped working.

what do i need to do?
