it may be a power issue if the usb bus doesn't have enough power to run those drives on its own.
You may need to connect the adaptor to a powered usb hub |

Power on the drive(s) and then plug the USB connector to your Mac. For some reason, connecting everything before powering on did nothing except make the external drive spin. |
