Dual monitor questions

I've got a macbook pro 15.4" screen (1440x900). I want to attach a 22" (1680x1050) monitor.

Will my macbook screen retain the native rez while the 22" retains its native rez? Can anyone foresee any issues with this?

Should be fine, just turn off mirroring or it'll default to the highest rez on the lower rez monitor (1440x900 in this case). I hook my Macbook Pro up to my HDtv all the time and keep native rez on the laptop and 1366x768 on the tv. Good luck!

Will both images be clear? I've read on the internet that there are often issues with clarity when using the extended desktop. Would those issues exist if I just sucked it up and downgraded to another, native monitor of 19" at 1440x900?

No way, moar res!

Seriously, plenty of people use their MacBook's with large external monitors with no issues. I'm typing this on a 1680x1050 20" monitor and it looks perfect.

That sounds like people who are mirroring their laptop to a larger rez external. The Mac can handle both resolutions just fine, when not mirroring.
