I have a fairly new iMac (2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) and just attached an external hard-drive (Buffalo, 1TB, FireWire 800 connection). It seems to cause some general problems such as:

- my mac won't restart when the hard drive is turned on (i.e., it seems to think it's some kind of boot device)... it hangs up on a white screen and only boots when I turn off the hard-drive
- Firefox often locks up and won't launch (as soon as I turn off the hard-drive, it works fine)
- Time Machine works sometimes, but often the back-ups hang up

Thanks for any assistance.

You didn't state which model Buffalo you currently have, however, if it's the 1 TB Drive Station model, it should have connections for both USB 2.0 and Firewire 800. Try using the USB 2.0 connection rather than the FW 800 as a test to see if the same problem occurs. Post back results.

Regards.
