My 3 Macs all require a 3.2 - 3.6 lithium-ion battery. They're expensive (NZ$20 ea). While shopping for something else, I came across some Lithium batteries, one of which looks similar in size to the worn-out one from my iMac. I will check that for certain in a week's time.

However the replacement (and much cheaper) Lithium battery I looked at - Model CR2 - was only 3v. It is intended for a camera. My question is: would a 3v Lithium battery be sufficient to keep the MacOS PRAM, clock, etc going? Might there be damage to the dependent circuit from insufficient voltage?

I found theses Teckcell 3.6v on ebay. You can get like 5 of them for $20.00. The voltage goes down over time anyway. I made a holder to go in a Starmax once instead of that block battery so I could use 3 AA's

Also look for a **** Smith Electrics store in NZ. Purchase mine via eBay in pairs as you ALWAYS need one on hand! Give the camera batteries a miss and look for the 3.6 volt type Lithiums.

Yeah, thanks Harry, but DSE NZ doesn't appear to stock them. I think you in Oz get a much better deal out of DSE than we do.

The best price I can find is at BatteryMasta @ NZ$18 + post. They're available too on TradeMe, but courier rates on top make then uncompetitive. Not to worry, the consensus seems to be "buy 3.6v", only one response suggested damage to the circuit from under-powering with 3v.
