I was really interested in the 30" cinema display until the other day when I was on Dell's site. I think Apple's 30" has an 800:1 contrast ration and 16ms response (it could be 8, but I don't think it was). The $1400 Dell 30" has a 1000:1 contrast ratio and a 6ms response.

Now seriously, why would one want the Apple display over the Dell? And please, serious answers only.

Is the quality of the panel used in the Apple that much better? If so, then what about stepping up to the $2000 Dell which is supposed to have a 3000:1 contrast ratio?

I know the Dell doesn't have dedicated controls to adjust color balance, but that's not necessary when using a screen calibration device.

I don't know the difference but the quality is definitely there with the Apple Display. I have one of each (23 inch not 30) and there is no comparison. Assuming, that the quality difference is the same on the larger size then the Apple version is much much better

The specs show that it's not. A lower contrast ratio and slower response time would mean less contrast and more ghosting. I guess it's something I'd have to see for myself. I've used the Apple 30" before, but not the Dell.

Can't really compare contrast between companies. They all figure it differently. It really only means something, maybe, comparing within a manufacturers own line.

The reviewers back in '05 when these two monitors were introduced were giving the nod to the Cinema Display, though noting that the Dell was brighter. In '06, Apple upped it's contrast ratings from 400:1 to 700:1, and most reviewers still gave Apple the nod. (This is when comparing the Dell 3007 model.)

If you're looking for a new 30", as much as I hate to say it, (I am not a fan of Samsung at all), their Syncmaster 305T will probably get you the most bang for your buck.

I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.
