MacBook - Connect MacBook to Panasonic 32inch tv

I'd like to view streamed internet videos on my tv. I've hooked up my macbook to the tv (mini dvi to dvi, dvi to hdmi) and can see only the macbook wallpaper - no dock or anything else. I know I'm missing something stupidly simple, but what? Any help much appreciated.

If you open system preferences there is an option for Displays - click on that (an I think you need to click on a tab for Arrangements) and you will see your 2 monitors - you need to tick the option that says something like 'mirrored' - this will then place the dock etc on both screens - currently you have an extended desktop - which can be handy - it will allow you to work on the macbook and to have Quicktime output to second screen for example.
