The image on my DVD player recently went bad. When I play a DVD, everything works as usual, but the image quality has just gone bad, as if I was watching a bootlegged VCD. Is this something that can be fixed by fiddling with connections or cleaner discs, or is it something more serious?

Are there horizontal lines on the screen that make the image choppy? My PowerBook occasionally does that, it goes away after a while, but I haven't found a way to fix it. If this is what you're talking about, if you find a solution please post!
It's really an annoying problem.

Does the problem occur with all DVD's?
How about when you play a disk using a different program, such as mplayer or vlc?
