Greetings

It's like this: I tried to drag a stack of mp3 files to a new folder that I had created. Unfortunately, my poor timing/trembling fingers caused me to drop the 1000 odd tunes onto the desktop! Definitely not what I wanted.

In a panic, I used Force Quit to shut down Finder, which after a bit, it did. I've sort of unscrambled the holy mess which was my Desktop, and thought it might be prudent to use Disk Utility to ensure that all was OK.

The option, under First Aid to Repair Disk is greyed out. If I go through the Verify Disk, I get the following attached result:

Can some kind person advise me what to do now?

Many thanks. Mitcherooney

Boot from your install cd and run DiskUtility from it.

You got the same result when verifying or when repairing? When running Disk Utility from OS X setup, you should repair first, verify second.

This won't help your current issue... and I'm not sure how to solve your current problem... but in the future... and to any others reading this.. You should have let all the mp3 files move to the desktop... and after the move was complete... press Cmd+Z to Undo the move and put them back where they originated from. Or in Finder ... Edit.... "Undo move of....".

I know its hindsight, and "shoulda, woulda, coulda"... but it will help in the future.

I hope you get it all straightened out.

Thanks Kash and Ride - yes, slowly, I'm learning that perhaps the 'puter knows best!

As to using Disk Utility from the install disc, I get the same result - that is, there is no option to repair the HD - it's greyed out.

Any other ideas that I might try?

Cheers M

We can try safe mode. Restart the computer and hold the Shift key. You should boot into safe mode. Try verifying the disk and see what happens.

But, just in case, did you boot the machine from the DVD containing Disk Utility?

And in case you don't know...in Single user mode (hold down command-s at boot) you can type fsck -fy to try and repair the disk.
Do it until it doesn't report any errors, then reboot.

I did this but the same error message....

But, just in case, did you boot the machine from the DVD containing Disk Utility?

Yes, I definitely used the DVD version of the utility.

I did this, The message reported was "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK. When I rebooted and ran Disk Utility again, I got the same error message as before!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, I decided to run a program called OmniDiskSweeper which checks what files are where. Found a file on Desktop called '.DS Store' - seemingly a hidden file (ie not visible on Desktop). Decided to delete this and crossed my fingers. Ran Disk Utility again, and joy! It reported back as below.

So thanks, Guys, for all your thoughts, advice and suggestions. Much appreciated. Cheers Mitcherooney
