I use windows and winRar to edit firefox extensions. they are in the extension xpi, in which in winrar you have to add. But after that you can open the xpi (which is just a zip) and edit the contents of the xpi. And when you make changes it saves changes in the archive.

Every mac archiver i found just makes a folder of the xpi/zip instead of opening it. is there such a program or does windows win this battle?

I've never had any luck in trying to edit a Firefox extension. I've used TextEdit, and the text editors BBEdit Lite and TextWrangler to open and change them, but I've found no way to save them again as workable extensions, including adding .xpi to the name. Windows, it seems, has the edge here.

If, however, you're attempting to load the extension into a Firefox version too new for it, the MR Tech Local Install extension has a check box that appears when installing extensions that forces too-old extensions to ignore their best-before dates.

It's no guarantee that the extension will run even if it loads, because of other problems that might occur, though it's been my experience that most will — at least until Firefox 3 moves the goal posts.
