I used bootcamp to partition my hard disk. Then, instead of Windows, I installed Fedora 8 on it and was surprised that the system did not recognize the file system and the installation. So, I decided to remove it. Of course, bootcamp refused to do anything and I tried to check things with Disk Utility. However it only sees the swap partition of linux and can't do anything to it and forgets about the root parition of linux. I reformated the partition using Windows and still the same problem is there and can't restore my hard disk.
So, any suggestions for the problem? |

Unfortunately, Boot Camp was designed for installing Windows. When you install any other operating system, especially if you change the file system, it throws off Boot Camp. So you have to either get a third party partitioning program to reclaim that space, or do what you did and start from scratch.

If you are too scared to do something as simple as partition a drive, then what are you doing screwing around with installing multiple operating systems, especially Linux?

Ive tried it before, twice, both times I had to wipe my drive and re-install OS X from scratch to make my drive whole again... Right now I have a ton of files and don't want to go through the hassle of replacing them all. Yes I have a time machine backup, I also have a bootable superduper backup, but that doesn't mean it's not annoying. At least now that I have the superduper I can boot from it and copy it back to my MBP's HD but I'd much prefer to find a partitioning utility that can handle wiping a linux partition so I could restore my HD without all the hassle if I wanted to. As someone who at times likes to run 4 to 5 OS's on the same computer I'm no stranger to partitioning. Like I said I'm just tired of having to do a complete wipe and I'm looking for a competent partitioning utility, because disk utility is great, but it cant handle linux partitions at all.
That being said, I was curious if ipartition does the job, bec I dont want to lay out the money for it and find out it doesn't work. Whew, forgive me, I'm tired and cranky... |

Parted Magic Live CD always worked for me. It can handle hsf+ file systems the Macintosh uses and it can expand/shrink partitions w/o loss of data. You could use the Parted Magic Live CD to delete the partition you don't want, and then expand the OS X partition to fill the unallocated space.
You can download it from here: http://www.download.com/Parted-Magic...-10663999.html iMac G3 600 MHz OS 10.3.9 |
