Hi,

I'm not a Mac owner/user yet, and I'd like to experiment a little with OS X before investing a lot of money in a Macintosh computer. I'm posting this under 10.5, because I didn't know where else to post it.

I have acquired a slightly used Dell Inspiron notebook that came with Vista Home Basic preinstalled on it. Since this computer only came with 1GB of RAM, Vista ran like cr*p, which is why the owner sold it cheap. I wiped the HDD clean and I'm running Linux on it now.

I was wondering if it's possible to install OS X as a virtual machine on this computer (under VirtualBox or VMware). I can add RAM if necessary. If this is possible, which version of OS X would be the best choice, and where can I purchase it? Is it legal to buy a "used" copy of OS X, or does each copy of OS X belong to a particular machine, like Windows?

TIA

in short it is possible, however we aren't to speak of that here. it's against apple's eula as i recall and discussions of things not aloud by apple are not aloud in this forum.

Okay, so in other words each copy of OS X belongs to a specific computer, like Windows? If that's the case, does Apple allow people to test drive a Macintosh (with a security deposit) for a reasonable price? I'd have to try out a machine for a couple of weeks before deciding whether to make a purchase.

I believe there is a 14 day return policy... and you may have to pay a restocking fee.

If you're anywhere near an Apple Store, you can play on them all day long. There are stories of people actually going into Apple Stores and writing books or submitting homework... they're pretty cool about it.
