Hi guys,
I got a new macbook a few days ago. I used the migration tool and restored from time machine. I can't remember exactly how or why but I had to change the username slightly. Now when I try do certain things, such as open a remote file in dream weaver I get the error: Can't create folder Macintosh HD:Users:myname:Library... That user no longer exists, so I changed the new username to match, it didn't fix things. I didn't expect it to either. What do I do? Thanks Paul

create a new user name, move all your apps, and stuff over.
delete old account. that would be easiest for me, and least time consuming. 2.4ghz Unibody | Hitachi 320GB 7200 | 256MB 9600gt |

I am having this same problem, (new username that I don't want), but not the problem with programs. After a restore, all of my progs work fine. I am having problems gaining access to some folders on my external hard drive that apparently belong to the old username after a restore. Optimally, I would like everything to go back to my old username and then I wouldn't have any problems accessing anything, and I would be happy because I would have my old username back. Can I delete the old one and then rename my current username? I know in System Preferences -> Accounts I can change my "User Name", but what I really want to change is what you see in the "Get Info" screen at the bottom under Sharing & Permissions: Name in the first slot back to my old one once I delete it. Can this be done in a system-wide change so everything, including the folders contained in MacintoshHD:users: will be changed over? Even files I have created on my External from the new username that will be renamed? |

I have read this article.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107854 and this post: Operating System "Reset" Itself However, I am actually attempting to do something else... I don't want the linking to the folders on my externalHD to be lost once I delete the older short username (Bob) and then rename my current one (Paul) to the old one using the "_new" technique described (Bob_new). I want to relink external hard drive permissions with the newly created old name (Bob_new) while also retaining permissions on all folders and files that were created and changed using the current new username (Paul). The sounds so confusing but I worded at well as I could. |
