Losing space when I delete stuff

So when I delete stuff, sometimes I lose space. Doesnt happen all the time though. Whats with that? I'm going by how much it says on the bottom of the finder window. Is that accurate? I have a iBook G4 btw.

I don't know why it does that.....just restart...when you do that...it goes back to normal.
