My computer will load and everything will appear fine, then it will suddenly just shut down with no explanation - it appears to freeze, with the screen off, and the computer still whirrs until I hold the power button for 10 seconds. I boot camped my macbook pro with windows xp. Nothing happened prior to this incident. What's going on? I've repaired both disks, but when I start up in windows, it suddenly claims to have an inconsistency..

Welcome to Mac-Forums, SolfegeDuck.

Unfortunately, this problem could have more to do with bad hardware than software, on first glance. Can you give some details on your Mac set up? All we can guess so far is that you are using OS X Tiger.

What is your Mac model? What are the specs? What is your exact OS version?

MacBook Pro, 10.4.11

Processor: 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo
Memory: 1 GB 667 MHz RAM

- I think it's a software problem because the mac partition of the computer seems to be working perfectly, like the other half of the computer doesn't exist. I haven't had time to get Leopard yet, so Boot Camp Beta is expired. Any ideas?

If it is software, there might be a way to check it. More or less.

Start up in Safe Boot mode by holding down the Shift key and log into your account.

Go to the System Preferences and create a new user account with the same privileges as your usual one has and select, under the Login Options, Automatically log in as: -your new account name here- in the drop down.

Restart. You should now be restarting in the new user account. If it is software related and not a problem that is system-wide, you should be ok in this new account.

If the problem persists, the problem is either system-wide (software) or it is hardware.

When did this problem start happening? Did you change anything in your Mac? Install any new software? Any new RAM? Added any new peripheral? And what have you done, on your own, in terms of troubleshooting so far?

Erm...I tripped over my power cord (that whole mag safe bit) while in the midle o a program, and it just shut down - which has never happened before when pulling out the power cord. The problem is that I can't stay on the computer long enough to create anything - it just crashes within 10 seconds of the main screen. This is through system boot, last known good configuration, everything. This started happening yesterday - I've tried everything I could think of - I tried booting up from the install disk, but the computer rejects the CD the moment the screen with the two hard drives side by side shows up. And I've started up in every possible form, I've repaired my hard drive multiple times, etc.

I'm thinking about reformatting the partition, but I'm not sure how to do that because Boot Camp beta has expired and is no longer available - so how would i install windows?

Did you try starting up in Safe Boot mode?

Yeah, that didn't work. But it's okay - I called Apple, they told me to get Leopard, and then they could fix it.

Well good luck!

I would have suggested DiskWarrior in the end but you're going another route looks like.

Keep us posted. I'd be curious to know what was the solution to this.
