Ok, so I learned how to rip my iMac apart and back together. My 10GB hdd is way to small right now, so I have a NTFS formated 40GB HDD ready to put in. I replaced the hdd, put in the install disc, as I watch a grey screen come up. Next, I see the Apple logo with a spinning disc on the bottom. After that, I see a flashing 'no sign' (like the one on your iPod when you plug it in), along with the spinning disc on the bottom. What do I have to do to get this thing working?

Turns out you have to hold the option key (only thing I didnt try) to get it to boot successfully off the CD-ROM drive. My iMac is a lot faster with the 40GB HDD. Plus, I now have room for all of my music.

If I can add something to your euphoria, perhaps you should buy and install a 120 gb HD before you get too far into you rebuild. 40 GB is not that big and will fill really fast. You max size is 120 gb so maybe spend the $100 or less and get set for a longer period of enjoyment.

Well done on the re and re of your HD. I did it as well years ago and the 120gb lasted till end of life of our beloved and now recycled purple iMac.

That really isnt in in my budget, haha. Hence why im using a G3. Love it to death, but would like something faster.

For anyone that knows: Will it hurt to run my imac without the bottom cover on? I have the metal grid and all that on, except im to lazy to put the bottom on.

Put the bottom on.... it was made that way and you love ya Mac don't ya? I had a similar problem about what HD.... In the end I purchased an external Formac 250gb for about £60. I backup to regularly as I have a lot of music and photographs I would hate to lose.
